British journalist George Hook (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) sneaked into Nanjing, intending to make the atrocities committed by the Japanese army public to the world. However, he was discovered by the Japanese army. When he was about to be beheaded, he was rescued by a Chinese guerrilla Chen Hansheng (played by Chow Yun-fat).
